There is no built-in support for a command line in MPS. MPS is meant to be operated by touch or point and click for most operations, rather than from the keyboard. Most MPS users aren't sitting in a 10-finger typing position.

There is support for shortcut keys, including custom definitions of short cut keys to run "use cases". Some sites have done quite a bit with these.

Use cases are not quite the same as commands, though you can create custom "one shot" use cases, i.e.use cases that run some functionality in the background rather than bringing up a form, or changing the layout of the user interface.

Still, there are some things that can't be scripted into a use case, and there is no command line parser in MPS. All that said, if you added a parser and a form that allows input of use case identifiers it's probably possible to do a number of things from a "command line" in MPS -- but again, it runs counter to the expected use of MPS in a vehicle and is not in the product's vision.

(Added: There's also no notion in MPS of "selected" event or unit the way there is in Dispatcher, so a user wouldn't be able to select an event and then issue a command line that worked on that event (or unit). With the 9.4 Multi-map operations can be done on a particular event or unit by clicking its icon and a pocket menu of actions pops up. That set of actions is customizable.)

Thanks Chip.

We've been using Police mobile computing since 1993 and users are slowly, very very slowly, learning how to do business without a commandline. They feel they are much slower than they were in the past. Using mousepad, scrollbars, buttons, listbox, monitors, ... They struggle with it.

Are they using 9.4? If so, I definitely recommend they consider adding shortcut keys where they can for frequent operations. This is easy to do.

And if they are using the Multi-map (leaflet based map), that they consider customizing frequent operations into pop-up menu on the map. This is a little harder, but can make some operations quite quick.

I'm also curious which site? There are dozens of MPS customers and most have made the adjustment after doing some configuration / customization.

The Multi-Map is a new secondary map. In 9.3 they could add a Bing based map or a Google map (with appropriate licensing). In 9.4 they can add a map based on the open source map engine "Leaflet". It can display multiple sources, e.g. an OpenStreetMaps base layer with Weather information over the top of it.

The user also has more interaction capability with the icons on the map, as I mentioned. And those can be configured specially for a site. (They still have to have the CAD Map, also, but can flip back and forth between the maps. Some sites are using the MultiMap most of the time.)

Here we have two tabs: one with CAD map, the other one witho google maps. Users are always runs google maps. But it has less functionnalities than CAD map. We're looking if it's possible to remove CAD map but this is another debate.

So as I understand, I should forget commandline... :(

Thanks Chip

You can't remove the CAD Map. It is required robustness -- the quality and behavior of Google Maps can't be assured. So the CAD Map is always available. Also a number of functions use CAD Map features underneath: Location Verify, Routing, Coordinate Conversion.

I don't believe so. Those map tabs are not part of the HTML that comprises about 99% of the MPS user interface, instead they are part of the UI "CAB" framework (WinForms), and are not easily controlled from code.
